Description:
On February 13, 2025 at approximately 1030 mountain standard time, Derek J. Mortensen died due to complications from malignant neuroblastoma of the brain. Derek was diagnosed this rare form of cancer on March 13, 2023. Derek underwent surgery and other procedures immediately post diagnosis. In the late fall of 2023 Derek requested approval to be covered by Department of Labor’s Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs (OWCP) “presumptive illnesses” allowance. After initial denial, Derek Mortensen received approval in June 2024. Derek underwent another procedure to reduce the tumor in July 2024 and received additional non-surgical treatment through the summer and fall 2024. Derek’s last non-surgical treatments were in November 2024 due to treatment options being exhausted.
