Description:
The State of Maine was in drought in the summer and fall of 1947 when numerous fires ignited in southern Maine's York County, as well as Acadia National Park farther north. Numerous towns and approximately 200,000 acres of forest burned in the ensuing weeks. The worst day of wind-driven fires was October 23. On October 29, wetting rain fell on parts of the state and slowed fire spread. A widespread wetting rain fell across Maine on November 12. In total 16 civilians died in the fires, while several thousand were made homeless.
