Description:
Leo J. Mecham, an 18-year-old firefighter with the California Division of Forestry (now CAL FIRE) was killed when the engine he was riding overturned and struck a tree. The engine crew was returning from a fire on the night of September 13, 1954, and was driving through the area of Hollister, California. The driver of the engine was seriously injured.
