Description:
During an arduous work capacity test (WCT or “pack test”) a wildland firefighter experienced back pain, lower extremity cramps, and elevated heart rate. An on-site ambulance was called over and EMS provided patient care and transport to the local hospital. The firefighter was eventually diagnosed a fractured T12 vertebra. In addition, rhabdomyolysis and a minor heart attack were both suspected. As of 11/5/24, the firefighter remains hospitalized, and the rhabdomyolysis and cardiac concerns have been ruled out.
