Lava Fire Helicopter Accident 2021

    A Bell 212 Helicopter working under contract with the US Forest Service experienced an accident while supporting the Lava Fire on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The pilot was the sole occupant of the aircraft and was utilizing Lake Shastina as a dip site when the event occurred. The pilot was descending to the dip when the aircraft experienced an unknown issue that caused it to settle into the Lake. The pilot was able to secure the aircraft fuel and electrical before exiting the aircraft and then was assisted by another incident helicopter to get to shore. The aircraft tipped on its side and became fully submerged. The pilot was not injured.
