Description:
On May 4, 2026, Dozer 252 was dispatched to the Mapes Fire on the Huron-Manistee National Forest. During direct line construction, the operator noticed flames originating from a small gap between the dozer hood cowling and the windshield. The operator extinguished the fire with the onboard fire extinguisher and proceeded with fire suppression operations with no further issues. The gap between the windshield and hood collected pine needles and other debris which created a receptive fuelbed for embers.
