While performing felling operations on a prescribed burn unit, a sawyer off an engine crew was putting a backcut into the tree they were falling when the tip of the bar contacted a hammerhead wedge (a wedge with a mechanical steel insert on its end). This caused the saw to kick back onto the sawyer's shoulder, resulting in a large laceration. The sawyer was transported to the hospital where the hospital staff treated their wound and released the patient the same day.
