On Wednesday, May 28, Forest Maintenance Supervisor David L. Warfel led training exercises as part of the Wildland Fire Academy at Shippensburg University. During classroom training the following day, Forest Maintenance Supervisor Warfel reported feeling ill. Later that evening at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, he was found deceased in his quarters from a cardiac event.
