Beginning on August 14, 2023, thunderstorms ignited numerous fires across Northwestern California, including on the Klamath and Six River National Forests. Following the initial attack period, uncontained fires were grouped into separate complexes depending on jurisdiction: the Six Rivers (SRF) Lightning Complex, and the Happy Camp Complex (Klamath NF). Over the following weeks and months, IMTs managed these fires by implementing strategies determined by agency leadership, fire management staff, IMT staff, and local partners. Notable was the SRF Lightning Complex's decision, after a period of precipitation, to use beneficial fire to contain the remaining open fireline within relatively large Potential Operational Delineation, or POD, areas. This strategy differed from the more traditional fire management strategy pursued on the Klamath National Forest's Happy Camp Complex.
