  • Description:

    On July 13, 2024, the lightning-caused Trout Fire on the Sequoia National Forest, California, was staffed by a load of smokejumpers who intended to establish an anchor point, develop incident objectives, and perform overhead functions. As the day progressed, fire behavior became more active, instigating the smokejumpers to burn the existing fuels in their jump spot/safety zone. Ultimately the decision was made by fire management and the smokejumpers to extract the personnel from the site by helicopter. The extraction was performed without incident and there were no injuries.
