Welcome Lake Fire Entrapment 1937

  • Location:

    Michigan
  • Date:

    05/08/1937
  • Incident Type:

    Entrapment
  • Description:

A total of 350-400 CCC firefighters, divided in 15-man crews, was assigned to the 1200-acre Welcome Lake Fire on the Huron National Forest in Michigan. Andrew Lindgren was a Forest Service fire foreman assigned to supervise all or a part of this group of firefighters. The fire crowned in a pine plantation and Lindgren pulled his crew back to a safe location. Lindgren was making sure all his crewmembers were out of danger when he was caught by the fire and perished. A Forest Service inquiry into the death of Lindgren indicated he was missing for about 15 minutes before his body was found. Another of the CCC crewmembers, 22-year-old John Latuszick (spelling possibly incorrect), received second degree burns but survived.
