Description:
On November 15, 2024, on a prescribed fire in Oregon, the burn boss and fire resources were driving to the burn unit in UTVs when one of the UTVs broke down. While attempting to pick up the broken UTV with a truck and trailer, the burn boss noticed that the previously frozen gravel road began to thaw and offer less traction. The trailer was disconnected, and the burn boss backed the pickup truck down the road. The pickup began to slide to the downhill, outer edge of the road as it backed down the road. Ultimately, despite attempts to correct the slide and maneuver the vehicle back towards the center of the road, the truck rolled off the road when the shoulder gave way. The burn boss was not seriously injured in the accident.
