Scratchline is the Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center’s first publication series, discontinued in 2010. Scratchline covered topics such as Wildland Fire Heavy Equipment Operations, Dispatch, Crew Boss, and Logistics. All published Scratchline issues are available for continued use and reference.

  • Scratchline Issue 13 - August, 2005
    “Dozer and Tractor Plow Lessons Learned” is this issue’s theme. Equipment operators from federal, state, and county agencies as well as private contractors were interviewed regarding their: Notable Successes, Most Difficult Challenges, Effective Practices, and Most Pressing Safety Issues Regarding LCES and Situational Awareness.

    Wildland Fire Related Vehicle Accidents: An Emphasis on the All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), ATV's vs. Passenger Vehicles, Perception and Reaction in Off-Road Situations, and The Do's and Don'ts of ATV Operation.
  • Scratchline Issue 11 - March, 2005
    A Lessons Learned Center Information Collection Team interviewed local agency personnel, Fire Use Management Team (FUMT) members, Fire Use Modules, and other resources on a Wildland Fire Use (WFU) event in the Pacific Northwest during August 2004. This unit was managing its first WFU under a revised fire management plan. Their numerous lessons are highlighted in this issue.

    The Center's Ninth Issue features information on How The New Wildland Fire Community Center Can Serve You with a Community Directory, a Discussion Center, and a Knowledge Exchange, lessons learned from the 2003 Successes and Challenges From AAR Rollups, a reminder about the Winning Series section of the Center's site, and Common Denominators of Serious Wildland Fire Related Vehicle Accidents (Perceptual Errors, Alcohol & Driving, Fatigue, and Lack of Seat Belt Use).
