Description:
While working spot fires on the 70 Fire below Highway 70 in the North Fork Feather River canyon northeast of Oroville, California, two engines became entrapped by a sudden upslope fire run. Seven firefighters deployed fire shelters in the black, while two others escaped up the hoselay to a midslope road where the engines were parked. Once the flaming front had passed, all firefighters returned to their engines, when another fire run forced them to return to their fire shelters on the road. In this second deployment, nine firefighters used fire shelters to survive the entrapment. One firefighter received a minor burn to the back of the neck.
