Description:
On July 28, at 1537 hours, a Division Supervisor, assigned to Division Zulu, deployed a fire shelter. For several days, the firefighter had been positioned as a lookout on an unmanned Division on the fire's southern flank. By mid-afternoon on July 28, fire behavior became more active than it had on previous afternoons. Observing extreme fire behavior, the firefighter moved into an escape route to previously identified safety zone. Later, as a precaution, the firefighter determined it was appropriate to deploy and enter his fire shelter. The intense fire did not reach the fighter. He was in his shelter for 18 minutes. He was not injured and was taken back to the Incident Command Post.
