    On August 18, 1978, Airco 53, a Cessna O-2 Skymaster aerial coordination aircraft for the California Department of Forestry (CDF, now CAL FIRE) crashed while assigned to a fire in the area of the Carrizo Plains. Information regarding the circumstances of this accident are not readily availabe. Killed int he accident were pilot Joe Holstine, CDF fire captain Paul Belveal, and firefighter Scott Sanford.
