August Complex Hit By Tree Medevac 2020

  • Description:

    This incident occurred on the August Complex (Northeast Zone) on the Mendocino National Forest. A U.S. Forest Service Strike Team Leader was in a truck when a tree fell on the truck, injuring the firefighter. The patient was initially unresponsive and was treated on scene by a Rapid Extraction Module Support (REMS) Team. The patient, transferred via ground and air ambulances to a trauma center, was assessed to have multiple compressed cervical vertebrae and multiple crushed thoracic vertebrae. As of last report, the patient was stable and alert, without neurological deficits. Surgical repair is expected. At the writing of this report, four days after the incident, the patient is still in the hospital. An anticipated release date and long-term prognosis are unknown at this time.
