Description:
U.S. Forest Service employee Archie White was assigned to the Bald Mountain Fire on Selway National Forest in Idaho when he was struck and killed by a green tree. The tree which fell onto White had broken when struck by another tree which had been undermined by fire. White was struck on the head and died instantly. His body was transported by stretcher 15 miles up the Lochsa River to the Powell Ranger Station. White was also a well-known logger in Western Montana.
In 1934 the Selway National Forest was divided between the Bitterroot, Clearwater, Lolo, and Nez Perce national forests. The Bald Mountain Fire occurred on what is now the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest.
