  • Incident Information:

  • Location:

    South Dakota
  • Date:

    07/21/1987
  • Incident Type:

    Entrapment
  • Description:

On the Battle Mountain Fire at approximately 1745 hours on July 21, 1987, the Strike Team Leader began walking the 14-person Job Corps crew to their secondary safe zone when the fire made a high-intensity run. Once they arrived at their rocky area safe zone, the fire became violent. The decision was made to deploy shelters. There was not sufficient space to enable crew members to deploy in a normal manner. Instead, most crew members deployed into crevices in the rocks, pulling their shelters over them. Thus, the crew used the natural protection of the rocks in combination with their shelters to accomplish a successful deployment. No burns or other injuries occurred.
