Description:
John Everitt was the Forest Supervisor of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest in California. On the afternoon of August 25, 1934, he left the fire camp on the south end of the Bear Springs Fire to scout the situation. Soon afterward, the fire increased activity on the south end and the fire camp was relocated. Everitt's path was retraced through tracking the following day. He apparently became entrapped by the advancing fire and eventually sought shelter by digging a shallow hole with his hands and lying flat in it. His body was discovered in that shallow hole.
