    Civilian Conservation Camp (CCC) crewmember Ervin Voegle from Camp F-14 near Custer, South Dakota, was killed when he was struck by lightning while patrolling a fire near Pactola, west of Rapid City. When the storms first started, three firefighters including Voegle sought shelter from the rain. Lightning struck Voegle, only feet from the others. Fellow crewmember Austin Rollag administered artificial respiration immediately but was unsuccessful in reviving Voegle. The other crewmember, Alvin Schneider, ran down the fireline for help.
