Black Hills Fire Hit by Tree Fatality 1936

    Archie Murphy, a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) crew member based in a camp in the Black Hills near the South Dakota-Wyoming border was killed when he was struck by a falling "jack pine" while assigned to a fire in the Black Hills area. Considering this location, "jack pine" most likely refers to lodgepole pine. Murphy died from his injuries at the Fort Meade Army Hospital near Sturgis, South Dakota.
