Description:
Edward Jerome Duffy and Carl Masterson, U.S. Forest Service firefighters stationed at the Deer Creek Fire Suppression Camp and the Lopez Canyon Guard Station, respectively, were entrapped and perished on the Bryant Canyon Fire on the Angeles National Forest. The men were part of initial-attack resources assigned to this fire that was burning in Big Tujunga Canyon near Sunland, California. These two men were found in a draw, having succumbed, most likely, to the ingestion of hot gases rather than burn injuries. An additional 50 firefighters were reported to have received burns and other injuries suppressing the Bryant Canyon Fire.
Two firefighters were also rescued by helicopter on this fire: a Lookout who had been reporting the fire's progression and found his position cut off by fire, and a firefighter who was suffering from heat illness.
