Description:
Date is approximate. The Bryant Fire was discovered July 17, 1979 about 25 miles southeast of Klamath Falls, Oregon, just north of the California border. The area was under the protection of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Over the next several days the fire made several runs and by July 20 was reported to be nearly 10,000 acres, having doubled in size on July 19. During this time, a 20-person handcrew became entrapped during a windshift and deployed fire shelters in a meadow. The exact date, location, identity of the crew, or any injuries are all unreported. The only reference to the entrapment is in Forest Service documents studying entrapments of the 1970s.
