    Five U.S. Marines were entrapped and perished in a 4,000-acre fire at Camp Pendleton near Oceanside, California the day after the fatal Loop Fire in Los Angeles County. The Marines were on a ridge overlooking Piedra de Lumbre Canyon when the fire outflanked them and trapped them. Four of the Marines either were discovered already dead or perished shortly afterward, while another, Henry Terrazas, was taken to the military hospital with burns over 85-90 percent of his body. Terrazas died in the hospital the following day.

    Those lost on this fire at Camp Pendleton: Lewis Connor, Leslie Hendrix, Cecil Henshew, Henry Terrazas, and Rodger Zarbok.
