    On August 14, 1931, Vernon Creson, a 34-year old World War I veteran, was fighting the Canyon Creek Fire on the Trinity National Forest, California. Creson observed that the fire was making a crown run and is reported to have made his way on foot to warn another group of firefighters to retreat to safety. Before he reached the crew Creson was entrapped by the fire and passed away.
