Description:
Two days after the fatal entrapment of Los Angeles County Crew 4-4 on the Canyon Inn Fire above Azusa, California, a San Bernardino County helicopter piloted by Fire Captain Donald Hardenberg crashed while dropping water on the fire. The helicopter may have been a Sud Aviation Allouette III, though sources disagree.
On August 29, 1968, an additional helicopter accident occurred over the Canyon Inn Fire when a Bell 47G registered N1136W was forced into the ground by a downdraft and subsequently rolled down the mountainside. The pilot was not seriously injured.
