Description:
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) enrollee James Hester was killed by a falling snag on the 2,600-acre Chipmunk Creek Fire on the south side of Yellowstone Lake inside Yellowstone National Park. Hester was based at CCC Camp YNP-1 at Mammoth near the Park's northern boundary. After he was struck by the snag, Hester was transported by boat to the lake's north end, where a road follows the lakeshore. From there he was transported by motor vehicle, but died before reaching Mammoth Hospital.
