Description:
At 1715 on July 12, 1972, a Boeing B-17 registered N73648 crashed while on a retardant run on the Cibola National Forest near Socorro, New Mexico. The plane collided with trees on its second drop, shearing off the left wing. Witnesses stated that the aircraft was too low during the drop sequence. The pilots, Bob Holliday and Mark Sloan, Jr., were killed in the accident. The fire was controlled later in the day at 8 acres by smokejumpers.
