Description:
Herbert Botella, a 29-year-old member of the Red Hats Mescalero Apache wildland fire crew, was killed by a boulder that struck him while assigned to a fire on the San Bernardino National Forest, California. Botella and four crewmates had taken a break to eat just after midnight when someone above them on a steep slope gave a "rock!" warning shout. The five firefighters below dispersed to escape, but in the darkness could not see the rolling rock's path. The four-foot diameter rock hit Botella on the head.
