Clallam County Entrapment Burn Injuries 1916

Fifty firefighters were entrapped while attempting to suppress a fire and keep it from destroying structures at an Olympic Peninsula logging camp located west of Port Angeles, Washington. The men loaded onto a logging locomotive and rode through the burning forest, crossing a burning bridge, until they reached safety. During this escape, some of the men received burn injuries to their backs and faces as well as smoke inhalation. The smoke inhalation was most severe to the two men who ran through the smoke to throw a railroad switch. They had suppressed fire for 36 hours straight. Despite their efforts, 18 buildings at Puget Sound Timber Company's Camp 5 burned.
