    During cold trailing operations on the Bitter Creek Fire, the crewmember was assigned to grid for hot spots along the heel of the fire. The heel of the fire was located within the steep slopes and rocky terrain of the Little Bitter Creek drainage. While cold trailing, the firefighter lost his footing and fell forward, attempted to catch himself, and put his right ungloved (for cold trailing) hand into a hot ash pit.
