    On August 5, 1986, an SA-315B Lama helicopter carrying one pilot and three BLM helitack crewmembers crashed in Western Colorado, killing all aboard. The helicopter was dispatched out of Montrose to check a reported fire in the area between Delta and Hotchkiss. Witnesses stated that the helicopter clipped powerlines, causing separation of the main rotor blades. The helicopter then fell to the ground near the Gunnison River, killing all four occupants: Pilot Jim Daugherty, and BLM helitack crewmembers Philip Hamilton, Harald Siewers, and Lee Steingoetter.
