Description:
On February 22, 2024, firefighter received burns on the back of the leg during firing operations on the Compartment 154 prescribed burn on the Oconee Ranger District, Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, Georgia. While walking/moving through some vines, drip torch fuel was spilled on pants, which ignited and caused burn injuries. The firefighter was transported by agency-owned vehicle to the local hospital with a larger than palm-sized burn, initially believed to be 2nd degree burns. The following day, the firefighter was treated in the Augusta, Georgia burn center for 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Treatment included skin grafts.
