    At 0225 hrs on September 20, 2000, a CDF on the Concow Fire responded to a residence int he path of the fire. The engine captain entered the structure and found nobody awake at the time. Meanwhile a firefighter from the engine stretched two hoselines to protect the house. The captain located a sleeping resident and awoke her, then began to assist her in leaving the home. The fire impacted a detached garage and involvement of the residence was imminent. The firefighter broke down the hoselay for immediate retreat. The captain could not convince the resident to leave the home, as she feared for the safety of her pets. The captain followed the resident back into the home and began closing interior doors to slow fire spread as the home became involved. The resident could not escape through the small bedroom window, the captain used this as means of escape from the home. The fire captain received burns to 11% of his body. The engine escaped the area, the resident perished in the structure.
