    Raymond Pike, a Washington logger serving with the Walla Walla penitentiary fire crew was critically burned at approximately 1600 on July 23, 1960, while assigned to the Cummings Creek Fire, Umatilla National Forest, Washington. Pike was suppressing a spot fire outside the line in a strong wind when his injuries were received. Pike was unable to escape the sudden flareup of fire behavior. His injuries were described as third-degree burns over his entire body. Forty-five hours after he was entrapped, Pike died of his injuries at Pomeroy Hospital on July 25.
