Curry County Hit by Tree Fatality 1914

Thomas Winfield, an employee at Harris Tie Camp (constructing railroad ties), was killed by a falling tree on a forest fire located near the Rogue River in Curry County, Oregon. Winfield, a brand-new employee at the mill, went with rest of the workers to assist suppressing this fire that ignited near the camp. While Winfield was working alone, a tree fell on him, crushing his chest and pinning him to the ground. Nearby colleagues ran to the scene after hearing the tree fall. They were able to cut the tree off of him. Even so, Winfield succumbed to his injuries. Ultimately, this fire burned a small area and did not cause significant damage. Very little information is readily available about Thomas Winfield. He was believed to have been 50 years old.
