    Hit by Tree
  • Description:

Thomas Winfield, an employee at Harris Tie Camp (constructing railroad ties), was killed by a falling tree while fighting a fire near the Rogue River in Curry County, Oregon. Winfield, a brand-new employee at the mill, went with rest of the workers to assist suppressing the forest fire that broke out near the camp. While Winfield was working alone, a tree fell on him, crushing his chest and pinning him to the ground. Nearby colleagues ran to the scene after hearing the tree fall and cut the tree off of the man, but he succumbed to his injuries. Ultimately the fire burned a small area and did not cause significant damage. Very little information is readily available about Winfield. He was believed to be about 50 years of age.
