  • Incident Information:

  • Location:

    Montana
  • Date:

    08/29/2018
  • Incident Type:

    Close Call
  • Description:

In the Davis Fire’s ICP, at approximately 0230 hours in the morning, a muffled “pop” was heard in an unoccupied yurt next to an occupied yurt. Upon investigation, it was discovered that a can of Dust-Off compressed gas had exploded within a large, latched Pelican Case (a molded plastic container that seals with an airtight and watertight gasket). The cause was determined to be hot air from a large outdoor ducted "salamander" type heater. This diesel powered, forced-air unit had two ducts running into two different yurts. The yurt that was occupied had the thermostat inside it. To force more hot air into the nearby yurt, the occupant had restricted airflow from the duct with a five-gallon cubie box. This caused the heater to run for long periods and cause excessive heat in the unoccupied yurt.
