    Tom Hutchins collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack on October 29, 1952 while helping suppress a forest fire on Deacon Creek on the Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee. Hutchins was one of many firefighters including Forest Service employees, National Guard, and students from the University of Tennessee. 

    A group of four firefighters were entrapped for five hours on the Deacon Creek Fire. Two of the men, local loggers, were admitted to Erwin Hospital for treatment of minor burns and exhaustion.
