Description:
While responding to the Deep Creek Fire near Townsend, Montana, a Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) helicopter experienced a hard landing that resulted in a fire. As the pilot maneuvered the helicopter to land, it began to descend from 500 feet in a phenomenon known as "settling with power." The pilot committed to landing, and upon touching the round, the helicopter spun and rolled over. The helicopter was destroyed in a post-accident fire. All personnel on board were able to safely exit the aircraft.
