Description:
This incident occurred on the Dixie Fire on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest. A Bureau of Land Management engine crewmember was constructing indirect fireline during a high heat watch day. The firefighter displayed symptoms of heat illness and crewmembers requested a Line Medic. This heat illness progressed quickly and the firefighter became unresponsive to verbal stimuli. Responders initiated a “RED” medevac. The firefighter was transported via agency helicopter from the incident to a hospital in Missoula, Montana. The firefighter was diagnosed with exertional heatstroke. The firefighter was released from the hospital three days later, traveled home, and continues to rest/recover per medical instruction.
