    The Elkhorn Fire was detected on the evening of July 24, 2023 on the Payette National Forest, within the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, in Idaho. On the afternoon of July 30, the Elkhorn Fire made a 20,000-acre, 9-mile run up the Salmon River Canyon, destroy 7 structures, and required firefighters to make quick decisions and take independent action to ensure not only their own safety but that of the public as well.
