Engine Incident within an Incident 2019

  • Incident Information:

  • Location:

    California
  • Date:

    07/31/2019
  • Incident Type:

    Hit by Tree
  • Description:

On Wednesday, July 31, 2019, as an Angeles National Forest engine is beginning their work day, a public vehicle arrives at the fire station and a man reports a hiker with a broken ankle on a nearby trail. A rescue helicopter is ordered for medevac and arrives overhead of the incident scene. The engine responds to the trail in a canyon where radio communication is very difficult. On scene, an EMT begins treatment while the engine captain oversees the scene. A tree, possibly dislodged by rotor wash, falls on the engine crewmembers, striking the EMT and engine captain. The other engine crewmembers onscene take over the incident, calling for additional medical support, and assuming patient care of the three injured people. Ultimately, the two Forest Service firefighters are transported by the rescue helicopter, and the hiker by ground ambulance.
