  • Description:

    An engine assigned to night shift on the Falls Fire, Malheur National Forest, Oregon, was directed to assess and prep a historic structure. A firefighter used a chainsaw to open the road for the engine, deciding to do this brief task without wearing chainsaw chaps. Once at the structure, saw operations continued still without protective chaps. The chainsaw experienced kickback, striking the firefighter on the leg immediately above the knee. The firefighter was taken to the hospital where the wound received 78 stitches.
