Description:
A group of smokejumpers were suppressing fire with water in a patch of birch trees near a deep, identified ash pit on Fire 525 in Alaska. One individual stumbled when moving positions and fell head first into the ash pit, disappearing completely under the ash surface. He emerged from the pit and was helped to solid ground where he was initially evaluated and his burned hands cooled with water. At the medevac site he was treated by smokejumper EMTs, and was flown of the fire approximately one hour after the injury occurred.
