    The State of Maine was in drought in the summer and fall of 1947 when numerous fires ignited in southern Maine's York County, as well as in Acadia National Park located farther north. Numerous towns and approximately 200,000 acres of forest burned in the ensuing weeks. The most severe day of these wind-driven fires was October 23. On October 29, wetting rain fell on parts of the state that slowed fire spread. A widespread wetting rain fell across Maine on November 12. In total, 16 civilians died in these fires and several thousand people became homeless.
