Description:
Robert Whitesides, the forest fire warden of Chimney Rock Township, North Carolina, was killed by a falling snag on the Green Hill Fire on the afternoon of April 10, 1939. Whitesides, a local farmer, joined a crew of volunteers, forestry workers, and CCC firefighters on a wind-driven forest fire. Whitesides was struck on the head and received severe head injuries, and was taken to Rutherford hospital, where he died just before midnight.
