  • Location:

    Idaho
  • Date:

    08/25/1931
  • Incident Type:

    Entrapment
  • Description:

Firefighters Herbert Harvey and Nolan Warner were killed when they became entrapped by fire near Grimes Pass on the Boise National Forest, Idaho. The two men were part of group of six firefighters escaping the fire area in a truck when the group stopped to attempt to extinguish a spot fire. The driver attempted to move the truck to a safe location but found it was impossible and abandoned the vehicle, which burned. While they engaged the spot fire, the main fire they had been escaping threatened to entrap the group. The majority of the crew sought refuge in a clearing while Harvey and Warner attempted to outrun the fire. The fire transitioned into the crowns of the trees and caught the two on a midslope road, where they died instantly.
