    Air tanker pilot Verde C. Beede was killed when his air tanker crashed during a retardant run on a fire on the Gila National Forest, New Mexico. It was reported that his wing hit a tree during his run and his converted TBM Avenger torpedo bomber impacted the ground. Beede was a pilot for the Sonora Flying Service.
