A Type 6 engine from Red Lodge Fire Rescue staffed with two responded to initial attack the Harris Fire near Joliet, Montana, at 1538 on July 16, 2021. The engine was first onscene, and the engine boss engaged the fire with hose. At 1615, a sudden wind shift and increase dramatically changed the fire behavior, sending 20-foot flames at the engine boss before he could retreat to good black only 15 feet away. The engine boss was picked up by the other engine crewmember in the Type 6, which was also impacted by the flare-up. The injured engine boss was transported to the hospital and then on to the burn center in Utah, with significant 2nd and 3rd degree burns.
